NCCU Volleyball Defeats Morgan State to Sweep Season Series

BALTIMORE, Md. – The North Carolina Central University volleyball team got solid contributions from all positions on the court on the way to picking up a 3-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference road win at Morgan State University on Friday evening.

The sophomore duo of Emmie Modlin and Kamren Harper led NCCU's attack with 17 and 16 kills, respectively. They both hit over .200 for the day.

Freshman Amarah Johnson just missed being a third Eagle with double-digit kills, settling for nine kills while tallying a team-high five blocks (three solo). Graduate student Jeslyn Spencer chipped in seven kills while matching her season-high dig total with 17 digs.

From NCCU's specialist positions, junior setter Bella Dearinger notched her fifth double-double with 40 assists and 10 digs and classmate Loren Johnson had a match-high 25 digs playing libero.

NCCU improved to 4-15 on the season and 3-7 in league play with the 26-24, 25-14, 21-25, 25-19 victory. The Eagles have won six straight matches against the Bears over the past three seasons.

In the tightest set of the day, NCCU needed three tries at set point before prevailing 26-24 on a kill by Modlin. With the second set tied at 11-all, the Eagles went on a 9-1 run to pull away and take the commanding two-set advantage. Morgan State prevented the sweep by jumping out to a 5-1 lead in the third set, never relinquishing the lead, and eventually winning the set by that same four-point margin. The Eagles avoided going to another five-set match with a strong hitting set in the fourth, ripping 16 kills at a .364 clip to close out the match.

Jourdan Page led the host Bears with a double-double that consisted of a team-high 14 kills and 11 digs.

NC Central will next play at Coppin State University on Sunday at 1 p.m.
