BALTIMROE, Md. – The North Carolina Central University volleyball team won the first set of Sunday's match, but the lone remaining undefeated team in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference was able to rally as the host Coppin State University volleyball team was able to prevail in four sets.
Sophomore
Emmie Modlin and graduate student
Jeslyn Spencer both had double-digit kills with over a .200 hitting percentage to highlight NCCU's attack. Modlin tallied a team-high 16 kills and contributed 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Spencer spiked 11 kills, including a kill on set point in the opening frame to put the visiting Eagles ahead, 1-0.
The host CSU Eagles hit .471 in the second set to level the score and finished with a .320 hitting percentage for the match to complete the comeback win. Coppin State improved to 20-3 on the season and 10-0 in league play with the 23-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-21 triumph.
NCCU junior libero
Loren Johnson finished the showdown with team-high totals of 13 digs and two aces. Junior setter
Bella Dearinger supplied 38 assists and nine digs while sophomore
Kamren Harper chipped in nine kills.
Junior Hope Casel led a balanced attack by Coppin State with 14 kills. She also participated in six of CSU's seven blocks to finish with a match-high 17.5 points.
NC Central will return to Durham to host University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday at 6 p.m. That match will be played in the LeRoy T. Walker Complex as part of NCCU's Homecoming festivities.
