Hugo Hidalgo Vega and sophomore
Kareem Abdul Hakim of North Carolina Central University's men's tennis team each collected wins at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships. Duke University hosted the regional tournament on Oct. 20-24, featuring several schools across North Carolina and South Carolina.
Hidalgo Vega and Abdul Hakim faced defeat in their opening singles matches but came back strong in their next draws. Abdul Hakim won his consolation match versus Ashe Ray of Wofford 7-5, 3-6 [11-9].
Hidalgo Vega notched a victory on Saturday against Vanja Petrov of MEAC rival South Carolina State 6-4, 6-2. He advanced further in the consolation draw to Sunday's match with Matt Pitts of Clemson, winning 7-5, 2-6 [10-8].
Freshman
Leo Fortier-Gariepy battled against Wake Forest's Luciano Tacchi, but dropped the match 3-6, 2-6. Sophomore
Naresh Bharathy also played on the first day of the tournament, falling in two straight sets of 3-6 to Will Peters of North Carolina.
Hidalgo Vega and Abdul Hakim teamed up in a doubles match against Alexander Visser and Faris Khan of the host school Duke. The Blue Devils triumphed over the Eagles 1-8. Fortier-Gariepy paired with junior
Oliver Saarinen in the doubles draw, falling 2-8 to Campbell's Damien Nezar and Benjamin Maes.
The ITA Carolina Regional Championships concludes the fall schedule, with the Eagles looking forward to playing in the spring.
