DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore outside hitter
Emmie Modlin led the North Carolina Central University volleyball team with 17.5 points in a narrow 3-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) loss to Howard University on Sunday afternoon inside McDougald-McLendon Arena.
The Eagles hit over .400 in their first and fourth set triumphs, but NCCU was held to five or fewer kills in each of their three set losses. The Bison prevailed 17-25, 25-17, 25-18, 19-25, 15-10 with reigning MEAC Player of the Year sophomore Rya McKinnon recording a match-high 24 kills.
Modlin filled up the box score with 12 kills, 10 digs, five blocks (two solo), four assists and two aces on the way to her 17.5-point performance. Modlin has three double-doubles on the season.
Graduate students
Jeslyn Spencer and
Isa Dostal followed with 11 and nine kills, respectively. Junior setter
Bella Dearinger contributed 29 assists while three Eagles reached double-digit digs, including Modlin (10) and juniors
Neira Joldic (11) and
Loren Johnson (11).
The scored was seven times over the first 14 points of the decisive fifth set before Howard (10-11 Overall, 6-2 MEAC) finished the match on an 8-3 run. The Bison hit .242 for the match, including heating up to a .444 clip in the final frame.
NC Central (3-15 Overall, 2-7 MEAC) will next travel to Baltimore, Maryland, to play both Morgan State University on Friday and Coppin State University on Sunday.
