Amarah Johnson led the North Carolina Central University volleyball team with nine points apiece in a 3-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) home loss to Norfolk State University on Friday evening inside McDougald-McLendon Arena.
Modlin topped the maroon and gray with eight kills while adding one ace. Johnson supplied seven kills and a team-best three blocks (one solo). Sophomore
Kamren Harper matched Johnson with seven kills and graduate student
Isa Dostal contributed six kills. Junior
Neira Joldic topped NCCU with three aces and classmate
Bella Dearinger tallied 25 assists.
The Spartans hit a season-high .404 on the way to winning the match by a final score of 25-14, 22-25, 25-15, 25-9. Norfolk State (7-8 Overall, 6-2 MEAC) sits in second place in the league standings after ripping 53 kills on just 94 attempts with just 15 errors.
The visitors started their hot-hitting performance with 12 kills on 16 swings with no errors for a staggering .750 hitting percentage in an 11-point win in the first set. NCCU got hot in the second set, hitting .444 to level the match. However, Norfolk State hit .368 in the third and .400 in the fourth to complete the road victory.
Freshman Gabrielle Gilbert led the Spartans with a match-high 22 kills. Sophomore Sydney McCree supplied the NSU attack with 41 assists while also chipping in six kills and three aces. Senior Shonte Seale netted 10 kills and three aces and she finished with 27 service attempts, six more times than anyone else in the match as the Spartans consistently went on runs on her service rotation.
NC Central will next host MEAC foe Howard University on Sunday at 1 p.m.
