CARY, N.C. – All five Eagles contributed counting scorecards to matching team scores on both days of the 2023 SAS Championship HBCU Invitational contested on Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 14-15, as the North Carolina Central University men's golf team secured a third place team result at Prestonwood Country Club.
Graduate student
Kendall Wallace and freshman
Isar Joshi led the Eagles with top-10 performances.
Wallace fired rounds of 69 and 72 on the 6,336-yard, par-70 Fairways Course layout at Prestonwood. His one-over par total of 141 was good for a tie for eighth place out of 25 golfers.
Joshi followed two shots behind in 10th place with scorecards of 70 and 73 for a strong collegiate debut.
All five Eagles finished within nine strokes of each other as NCCU turned in stellar 18-hole team scores of 286 both days, which ties for the second lowest team scores produced in program history (and five shots off the program-record 281 shot in the same event in 2022).
Freshman
Jamal Hutchison (74-72—146), freshman
Iszac Bertagnole (73-75—148) and senior
Trey Morse (80-69—149) rounded out play for the maroon and gray with all three Eagles contributing at least round to NCCU's daily team scores.
The one-under par 69s carded by Wallace and Morse are season-low rounds as well as the 73 by Bertagnole. Morse's 69 is a new career-low, 18-hole collegiate competitive round.
Florida A&M University won the team title and the Rattlers had both the tournament medalist and runner-up. NCCU finished third overall with wins over Prairie View A&M University and University of Arkansas Pine Bluff.
NC Central will next tee up in the Alabama A&M Golf Classic at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Hampton Cove on Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 23-24.
