ELON, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men's tennis program competed at the Elon Invitational on Sept. 23-25, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, and freshmen
Naresh Bharathy (New Hill, N.C.) and
Neiman Sneed (Augusta, Ga.) helped to lead the Eagles in both singles and doubles.
Bharathy won the consolation bracket of the Powell singles flight, 6-2, 6-0 over Ibraham Abbas of Norfolk State, and Sneed was a finalist in the White singles consolation flight. Sneed advanced to the final round after a dramatic 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 win over Vselovod Rusin of Longwood, but fell, 6-4, 6-4, to Jay Montague of UNC Greensboro in the final round.
Bharathy and Sneed then teamed up to finish second in the White doubles flight, after a narrow 7-5 defeat to Emiliano Jorquera and Donte Armbrister of Hampton.
Sebastian Pino (Caracas, Venezuela) and
Oliver Saarinen (Espoo, Finland) dueled together to finish third in the Gold doubles flight, with a 6-2 victory over Edoardo Cecere and Laurenz Blickwede of Queens to finish the weekend.
The teams of
Shaka Cristellotti (Trento, Italy) and LaQuan Gilchrist (Raleigh, N.C.), and
Liam Murtaugh (Andernach, Germany) and
Facu Olmedo (Miami, Fla.) both competed in the White doubles flight, and Murtaugh/Olmedo finished fourth place in the main draw. Murtaugh/Olmedo defeated Rusin and Ryan Foster of Longwood, 6-4, and Cristellotti/Gilchrist defeated the mixed team of Roosevelt Brown of Norfolk State and Jeremiah Williams of Hampton, 6-1, to win the consolation bracket of the flight.
The Eagles will now prepare to take the courts again at the UNCG Hidden Dual on Oct. 7-9.
