NCCU Student-Athletes Honored for Academic Achievement

DURHAM, N.C. – During North Carolina Central University's 73rd annual Honors Convocation on Friday, 159 student-athletes were recognized for their academic achievement.
 
Two student-athletes, Hannah Gaines of women's tennis and Madison Mifsud of softball, were among the seven senior and recently-graduated students that received the University Award for Academic Excellence, which honors students who earned a cumulative grade point average of 4.0.
 
Other student-athletes to garner academic awards from their respective departments are:
Award of Academic Excellence, Graduating Senior (Criminal Justice) - Madison Mifsud
Award for the Highest Academic Performance by a Sophomore (History) - Clarence Morse
Julia Wyatt Harrison Award for the Junior, NC Native, English Major with the Highest GPA (Language and Literature) - Tracey Manigault
Award for Excellence in the Study of German (Language and Literature) - Matthew Swepson
Award for Academic Excellence by a Senior (Psychology) - Celene Morris
GlaxoSmithKline Women in Science Endowed Scholarship (Biological and Biomedical Sciences) - Hana Lee
American Chemical Society Analytical Chemistry Award (Chemistry and Biochemistry) - Daniel Barbare
Award for Highest Academic Performance in Sports Medicine (Kinesiology and Recreation Administration) - Madeline Anderson
Award for Highest Academic Performance in Recreation Administration (Kinesiology and Recreation Administration)  - Latrell Collier
Virginia Politano Leadership Award (Kinesiology and Recreation Administration)  - Kortnee Booth
Management Award to the Senior with the Highest Cumulative GPA - Nicholas Fajardo
 
In addition, the honor students in attendance on Friday were addressed by keynote speaker Harmony Cross, a 2013 NCCU graduate and former track & field student-athlete, who is currently the dean of Student Success at Oberlin College and Conservatory in Oberlin, Ohio.
