NCCU’s Thomas Maintains Control of MEAC Rookie of the Week Honors


NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman guard Diamond Thomas was named the MEAC Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week for a fourth consecutive week and sixth time this season after averaging 17.5 points per game in North Carolina Central University's two home games last week, as announced by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Tuesday, Feb. 22.
 
Thomas scored 12 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, in NCCU's win over Delaware State University on Saturday. She followed that up with a game-high 23 points in Monday's home game against University of Maryland Eastern Shore, which included a perfect 7-for-7 performance from the free throw line.
 
The Knightdale, North Carolina, product has scored in double digits in 12 straight games. She has now reached the 20-plus point plateau in four games this season after her 23-point performance against the Hawks.
 
On the week, Thomas also averaged 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game.
 
Thomas, who is averaging 17.7 points per game in 10 MEAC games, has steadily closed the gap on the scoring lead in the league. Thomas remains second in the conference in scoring at 14.1 points per game, but is now averaging just under two points per game less off the scoring leader (Coppin State's Jaia Alexander).
 
Thomas also ranks second in the MEAC with an average of 2.4 made 3-pointers per game.
 
The MEAC has announced Thomas as the Rookie of the Week six times: Nov. 30, Jan. 11, Feb. 1, Feb. 8, Feb. 15 and Feb. 22.
 
NC Central next travels to MEAC frontrunner Howard University for a showdown in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.
