NCCU Women’s Tennis Swept at Wake Forest


WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Demon Deacons, who are receiving votes in the current ITA national poll, limiting visiting North Carolina Central University to just seven singles game wins as Wake Forest University posted a 7-0 dual-match victory on Saturday afternoon.
 
Freshman Lafi Joao accounted for three of NCCU's seven game wins at the fifth position in the Eagle lineup.
 
Wake Forest also defeated Furman University on Saturday to improve to 6-2 on the season.
 
NCCU's singles lineup consisted of sophomore No. 1 Jade Houston (L, 6-1, 6-0), freshman No. 2 Kennedy Hill (L, 6-1, 6-1), sophomore No. 3 Maria Picazo (L, 6-0, 6-0), freshman No. 4 Isabelle Exsted (L, 6-1, 6-0), Joao (L, 6-0, 6-3) and freshman No. 6 Anaiah Jones (6-0, 6-0).
 
The Demon Deacons won doubles with 6-2 and 6-1 wins, respectively, on courts two and three. Joao and Houston were involved in a close No. 1 doubles match against the 22nd-ranked doubles tandem of Samantha Martinelli and Casie Wooten, but that match was stopped with Wake Forest leading 5-4 after the doubles point was secured by the hosts.
 
NC Central (0-4) will host its next four matches, beginning with UNC Asheville on Friday, Feb. 25 at noon.
