DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central University junior guard
Ja'Darius Harris scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half to spark the Eagles in a 58-53 victory during a seesaw battle with Gardner-Webb University on Saturday afternoon inside NCCU's McDougald-McLendon Arena.
In a contest that had 13 lead changes and nine ties, the score was knotted at 45-45 with less than five minutes remaining. Harris tallied seven points during NCCU's 13-8 run to end the game, including a 3-pointer to give the Eagles a five-point cushion with three minutes left and a clutch pull-up jumper with 30 seconds left to make it a two-possession game.
Harris's 13 points for NCCU (3-3) was matched by fellow junior guard
Justin Wright, who also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Senior guard
Eric Boone contributed nine points, five rebounds and three assists for the victors, while senior center Brendan Medley-Bacon added eight points and five caroms.
Gardner-Webb (1-5) was topped by junior guard Anthony Selden with 14 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots. The Bulldogs, who played a tight contest with nationally ranked North Carolina in a six-point setback and beat North Carolina A&T a week ago, missed several opportunities at the charity stripe, converting just 11 of 21 free throws (52.4%).
NCCU returns to McDougald-McLendon Arena on Tuesday, Nov. 29, to host UNC Asheville at 7 p.m.
