GREENSBORO, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men's tennis program competed at the Spartan Fall Invitational hosted by UNC Greensboro on Oct. 8-9, and
Sebastian Pino (Caracas, Venezuela) earned a pair of singles wins while the doubles partnership of
LaQuon Gilchrist (Raleigh, N.C.) and
Facu Olmedo (Miami, Fla.) picked up a pair of doubles victories.
Pino opened the event by winning two singles matches against David Flisberg (Stockholm, Sweden) of UNCG, and Esteban Penagos (Bogota, Colombia) of Elon. Both matches went into third-set tiebreaks, but Pino prevailed, 6-3, 6-7, 7-4 over Flisberg, and 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 over Penagos. The duo of Gilchrist/Olmedo picked up their first doubles victory, 6-4 over Rivers Cahill (Conway, S.C.) and Neil O'Connor (Dublin, Ireland) of Coastal Carolina on day one as well.
Oliver Saarinen (Espoo, Finland) picked up the final Eagle victory of day one with a valiant three-set win over Ben Zipay (Osprey, Fla.) from Elon, 2-6, 7-6, 8-6.
Gilchrist/Olmedo teamed up for another win on day two, as they defeated Andrew Black (Raleigh, N.C.) and Harrison Gwynn (Greensboro, N.C.) from UNCG, 7-6 (7-4). Two other Eagles pairings played into a tiebreak in doubles on day two, but the most thrilling was
Naresh Bharathy (New Hill, N.C.) and
Neiman Sneed (Augusta, Ga.) who were defeated in a marathon match by Penagos and Luke Queiroz (Ridgefield, Conn.) from Elon, 7-6 (14-12). Olmedo tied up the final win for the Eagles in the event in singles, as he took down Cahill of CCU, 6-3, 7-6.
The Eagles will now prepare for the ITA Carolina Regional that will be hosted by Duke University on Oct. 21-25.
