Eagles Sweep Alabama State for First Win


BUIES CREEK, N.C. — Senior middle blocker/outside hitter Ammaarah Williams ripped a match-high 12 kills on just 15 attempts for a scorching .800 hitting percentage to pace the North Carolina Central University volleyball team to a 3-0 non-conference victory over Alabama State University Friday afternoon at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Dunn Campbell Invitational.
 
The Eagles hit .398 as a team on the way to winning 25-14, 25-23, 25-13. NCCU leveled its record at 1-1 while the Hornets remained winless on the season at 0-5.
 
Williams, a Preseason All-MEAC selection, added four block assists and one ace to her dozen kills for 15.5 points.
 
Seniors Arlanda Faulkner and Celene Morris helped NCCU coast to the neutral-site triumph with nine and eight kills, respectively, as they both converted on over 40-percent of their attempts. Faulkner hit .400 and Morris logged a .412 mark on her career-high eight kills.
 
Sophomore setter Lauren Janok posted her second straight double-double to start the season with 31 assists and 10 digs. Janok also had team-best marks of two aces and six blocks (one solo, five assists).
 
Morris topped the maroon and gray with 11 digs.
 
Faulkner netted four kills in helping the Eagles coast to the 11-point win the in first set. NCCU then hit .400 in the middle frame and a Janok kill finished off the narrow two-point set win. The Eagles won the first four points of the third and maintained control to complete the sweep with a 12-point win that stanza.
 
Jada Rhodes led Alabama State with 10 kills.
 
UP NEXT: NC Central will conclude play at the Campbell Invite with two more matches on Saturday, beginning with a 2 p.m. contest against James Madison before battling the host Camels at 6 p.m.
