DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University senior
Maru Berghaus has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for June 2021 in recognition of her outstanding performance on the court and in the classroom.
Berghaus was named a Class of 2021 valedictorian, achieving a perfect 4.0 grade point average (GPA) after being a four-year women's tennis student-athlete at NCCU.
Playing in the upper half of NCCU's lineup in all 59 dual matches she competed in over four seasons, Berghaus won a season-best eight matches in 2019 on her way to being named Second Team All-MEAC.
Berghaus was named both ITA Scholar-Athlete and MEAC All-Academic Team throughout her time representing the maroon and gray, while also collecting numerous other awards such as team MVP (2018 & 2019), NCCU Female Iron Eagle Award (2020), Debra Saunders-White Leadership Award (2021), Eagle Excellence Academic Award (2021) and Chancellor's Award (2021).
After graduating NCCU in May with a perfect 4.0 GPA as a sports management major with a minor in coaching, Berghaus is next attending graduate school at St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida, in the fall of 2021 as she works towards a master of science degree in sports administration.
Berghaus, who hails from Cologne, Germany, did her practicum with the NCCU Athletics Department in 2018.
