Eagles Hit .500 to Fly Past Lady Bulldogs

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The North Carolina Central University volleyball team had its best hitting percentage in a match since 2012 en route to a 3-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division victory over South Carolina State University in McDougald-McLendon Arena Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles hit .500 in the 25-7, 25-13, 25-8 sweep. The .500 hitting percentage ties NCCU's second best mark in the programs NCAA Division I era and only trails a .586 performance against Savannah State University on Nov. 11, 2012.

Junior middle blocker Ammaarah Williams led the hot-hitting attack with 10 kills on just 12 attempts for a staggering .833 hitting percentage. Her 10 kills are a season-high total on the way to a team-best 13.5 points as she added two aces and three block assists.

Freshman setter Lauren Janok orchestrated the pinpoint attack with a season-high 30 assists on NCCU's 46 kills while the team only committed five hitting errors. Junior Celene Morris also chipped in eight assists.

Junior Jasmine Sanders and freshman Maria Almeida followed with seven kills apiece. The Eagles got solid hitting across the front row, including five spikes by senior McKayla Young; four kills apiece by junior Estfania Louis and sophomore Abby Vacha; and three kills off the arms of Janok and junior Hana Lee.

NCCU served up a season-high 13 aces. Lee led the way with four aces while senior Yomaries Villegas added three aces.

Defensively, senior Braxton Wright topped the Eagles with seven digs. Janok and Almeida each had six digs while Williams and Villegas both had five digs.

NCCU set the tone of the match early, smacking 18 kills on 30 attempts without an error for a .600 percentage. The .600 hitting percentage coasted the Eagles to the 25-7 win in the opening set.

Two aces by Villegas during an early 5-0 run by the Eagles helped NCCU take control of the middle set early. The Lady Bulldogs did pull within four points at 13-9, but Sanders had kills on three of the next four points to keep the Eagles ahead and eventually pulling away to the 12-point win.

Lee had three of her four aces in the third set and the maroon and gray hit .545 in final frame to close out the sweep with another lopsided 25-8 win.

South Carolina State remained winless on the season and in league play with matching 0-7 records. Freshman Eleisha Thompson led the Lady Bulldogs with four kills.

NC Central (3-2, 3-2) will host SCSU again in its last home match of the season and the Eagles will celebrate Senior Day before the contest begins on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
