Fernandez Notches NCCU’s Point against the Terriers

DURHAM, N.C. — Freshman Josefa Fernandez (Santiago, Chile) picked up her first collegiate singles win for the North Carolina Central University women's tennis team in Saturday's home opener against Wofford College.

Senior Maru Berghaus (Cologne, Germany) and junior Ivana Dragovic (Novi Sad, Serbia) also teamed up for a doubles win for the maroon and gray.

The Terriers won the other five singles and two doubles matches to spoil NCCU's home debut.

Wofford leveled its record to 1-1 on the early season with the 6-1 team triumph.

After the Terriers secured the doubles team point with 6-2 and 6-0 wins on courts one and three, respectively, Berghaus and Dragovic tallied their victory for the Eagles on the middle court. They led most of the match and won the last couple of games to prevail 6-3.

Berghaus and Dragovic have been doubles partners in portions of each of the last three seasons and now have seven doubles wins as a tandem.

Fernandez recorded her victory in the fourth position in NCCU's lineup. She topped senior Kay Kluska in straight set scores of 6-3 and 6-1. Kluska was only trailing 4-3 in the first set when Fernandez won the next two games to secure the opening set. Fernandez coasted from there, winning eight of the final nine games played for her first collegiate win for the Eagles.

Another freshman nearly won for NCCU in Jade Houston (Raleigh, N.C.). She went three sets before falling at No. 3 singles to junior Liz Massie by a score of 6-4, 0-6, 6-2.

NC Central (0-2) is next scheduled to host Shaw University on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 1 p.m.
