DURHAM, N.C. — A pair of freshmen in
Josefa Fernandez and
Maria Picazo were unable to win a couple of close superset tiebreakers in their respective singles matches as North Carolina Central University was defeated 7-0 by Campbell University in non-conference women's tennis action at the NCCU Tennis Courts Wednesday afternoon.
Fernandez (1-2) started strong in her attempt at a second straight singles win by winning her first set, 6-2. However, senior Lucile Pons rallied to tie the No. 3 singles match with a 6-3 second-set victory. With the team match already determined in favor of the visitors, they played a superset tiebreaker in the third and Pons was able to squeak out that race to 10 points, 10-8, to complete the comeback.
In the final match of the day, Picazo fought back on freshman Anna-Marie Kopecka before also dropping her superset tiebreaker by two points. Kopecka edged Picazo in the fifth-positioned singles match by a final score of 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9).
Campbell (1-3 Overall) earned its first win of the season by prevailing in all seven matches contested on a warm and sunny February day. NCCU (0-3) forfeited No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles because of an injury.
The Camels secured the doubles point with a pair of 6-3 wins before straight-set singles victories on courts one, two and four clinched the team triumph.
In doubles, senior
Maru Berghaus and junior
Ivana Dragovic were unable to win their second consecutive match to dip below .500 at 1-2 and Fernandez partnered with freshman
Jade Houston for the first time.
NC Central is next scheduled to play at Elon University on Saturday at 11 a.m.
