ELON, N.C. — Freshman
Maria Picazo supplied the North Carolina Central University women's tennis team with its only point in a 6-1 non-conference road loss to host Elon University on Saturday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Picazo's first collegiate singles win came at the fifth position in NCCU's lineup. Picazo, who lost a superset tiebreaker in her previous match, was able to win the sprint to 10 points for the third set this time. She held off fellow rookie Alison O'Dea by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).
Freshman
Josefa Fernandez also went to a third set 'tiebreaker' for a second time this week. However, she suffered the loss again as sophomore Sibel Tanik won the showdown on court by a tally of 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4).
Picazo and Fernandez pace the Eagles with 1-3 singles records.
The Phoenix won the other three singles matches contested in straight sets to secure their third straight win as Elon improved to 6-2 overall.
Senior
Maru Berghaus and junior
Ivana Dragovic were up 4-3 in their doubles match for the Eagles, but Victoria Saldh and senior Sofia Edo won four of the final five games to rally for the 7-5 win. A 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles secured the first team point for the Phoenix.
Saldh and freshman Lizette Reding both improved to 5-1 on the season with their respective singles wins for Elon. Saldh won the marquee singles match 6-0, 6-2 over Berghaus while Reding notched a 6-0, 6-3 triumph at No. 3 singles over freshman
Jade Houston. Sophomore Shauna Galvin accounted for the last home point, winning on court four 6-1, 6-2 over Dragovic.
NC Central (0-4) is next slated to host Longwood University on Friday, March 5 at noon.
