PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Senior
Ammaarah Williams led the North Carolina Central University volleyball team in kills for a fifth straight conference match, but host University of Maryland Eastern Shore was able to claim the 3-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory on Sunday afternoon.
With the 25-18, 25-18, 25-20 triumph, Eastern Shore (8-8 Overall) was able to move into a tie with NCCU (4-10) in the league standings at 3-2 apiece.
Williams blasted 10 kills, her fourth double-digit kill performance in league play this season, and added one ace and two block assists to finish with a dozen points. Senior classmate
McKayla Young followed with seven kills.
In her first start at the setter position this season, senior
Celene Morris contributed a match-high 24 assists on NCCU's 28 kills. Redshirt sophomore libero
Alyssa Pieh topped the Eagles with eight digs.
The Eagles committed more hitting errors than successful kills in dropping the first set by seven. NCCU's attack started to click better in the second set, but so did Eastern Shore's as the Hawks used 15 kills to win the middle frame by the same seven-point margin. The Hawks completed the sweep by scoring the first five points on the last set and never relinquishing the lead before winning by that five-point margin.
Seniors Marina Cruz and Alexis Lee both hit over .600 for the match and finished with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, to lead the victorious Hawks. Sophomore Maya Hendricks contributed a match-best 13 digs.
NC Central returns home and will host MEAC foe Howard University on Friday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m.
