ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The North Carolina Central University volleyball team improved to 3-0 through its first three Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference clashes for the first time since joining the league in 2011-12, after netting a 3-0 win at South Carolina State University on Friday evening.
NCCU (4-8 Overall, 3-0 MEAC) received contributions throughout its lineup on the way to its 25-16, 25-12, 25-17 triumph over the winless Lady Bulldogs (0-12, 0-13).
Senior
Ammaarah Williams, who is the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, hit .417 on the way to a team-best totals of 13 kills and three block assists. Williams has led the Eagles in total kills in all three conference conquests. Classmate
Arlanda Faulkner followed with her third consecutive double-digit kill performance, tallying 11 kills. Fellow senior
Celene Morris filled up the box score after finishing with six kills on 12 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage to go along with nine digs, a match-high two aces and two block assists.
Sophomore
Lauren Janok continues to orchestrate the hot-hitting NCCU attack, providing 33 assists. Janok, who also contributed seven kills, is the reigning MEAC Setter of the Week as the Eagles are hitting .297 against conference competition.
Redshirt sophomore
Alyssa Pieh was NCCU's top passer with 19 digs.
After five early ties, Williams was part of five NCCU points with three kills and two block assists during a 6-2 run that helped the Eagles start to fly out to a nine-point win in the first set. Williams finished with seven kills in that opening game.
The maroon and gray attack hit .345 in the middle set to coast to a lopsided 13-point win. Morris served up both of her aces during that stanza. She then matched Faulkner with four kills apiece in the third set to help NCCU complete the sweep.
South Carolina State received a match-high 15 kills from junior transfer Maria Julia Vedovatto Loureiro.
NC Central will next visit MEAC frontrunner Delaware State University (15-1) in a potential clash for first place in the league when the Eagles head to Dover for the marquee match on Friday, Oct. 8, at 6 p.m.
