CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Former North Carolina Central University women's basketball standout Cassie King has been selected as a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's (CIAA) 2021 John B. McLendon Hall of Fame Class, the conference announced on Jan 12.
King will be among six inductees, whose accolades within the conference span over four decades, joining Kenny Phillips (Fayetteville State University), Johnny Stoutamire, Jr. (Livingstone College), Greg Toler (Saint Paul's College), Celeste Trahan-Davis (Elizabeth City State University) and Johnnie Walton (Elizabeth City State University).
The all-time leading scorer in NCCU women's basketball history with 2,150 career points and the school's second-leading rebounder with 1,076 rebounds, King ended career as fourth-leading scorer and seventh-leading rebounder in CIAA history. She became only the second player in CIAA history and 15th player in NCAA Division II women's basketball history to amass more than 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
King was a three-time All-Conference, All-State, All-Region and All-America Honorable Mention (2005-07) honoree, and a four-time CIAA All-Tournament Team selection (2004-07). She scored a school and conference tournament record 59 points versus Bowie State on March 1, 2005, and was voted 2007 CIAA Tournament MVP after leading NCCU to its first conference championship title in 23 years and second straight NCAA playoff appearance.
The 2021 John B. McLendon CIAA Hall of Fame class will be celebrated in a virtual presentation that will air on Friday, Feb. 26 via the CIAA Sports Network. This event will be a part of the schedule of events encompassing the CIAA virtual tournament experience, being held Feb. 23-27. Details on how to take part in the virtual experience will be announced at a later time.
Since its inception in 1967, the CIAA Hall of Fame has enshrined 293 honorees. It was renamed after legendary coach and administrator John B. McLendon in 2000. A 1978 Hall of Fame inductee, McLendon is also credited as one of the founding fathers of the CIAA Basketball Tournament, which began in 1946.
