DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University baseball junior Luis DeLeon has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for March 2020 in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments on the field and in the classroom.
 
DeLeon produced eight RBI and scored six times in just five March games before the season was cancelled due to the coronavirus threat. He started the month by ripping two doubles and driving in four runs in a triumph over Saint Joseph's University. DeLeon added two more RBI and one run scored in a victory over Youngstown State University, and capped the month with one RBI and three runs scored in a conquest of Longwood University. The Eagles only played 17 games in 2020, but DeLeon was able to string together an impressive 13-game hit streak that extended into March.
 
The resident of Providence, Rhode Island, was named the NCCU baseball team MVP after finishing the shortened campaign batting a team-best .393 with 24 RBI, 15 runs, six doubles, four home runs and six stolen bases. DeLeon also topped the Eagles with a .689 slugging percentage and .500 on-base percentage.
 
DeLeon was named to the Large School Division Elite Team First Team by Black College Nines after ranking eighth nationally with 24 RBI. He also finished the season ranked inside the top-100 nationally with 1.41 RBI per game (17th), 42 total bases (47th), four home runs (67th), a .689 slugging percentage (67th), 24 hits (76th) and a .500 on-base percentage (78th) and six doubles (81st).
 
The run producer, who mostly played a combination of right field and designated hitter for the maroon and gray this season, was named MEAC Player of the Week two of the four weeks the league announced that honor this season. 
 
DeLeon, who transferred to NCCU from Central Alabama Community College, is a sports medicine major at NCCU. He boasted a 3.533 grade point average (GPA) in his first semester at NC Central this past fall.
