DURHAM, N.C. — North Carolina Central University senior forward
Paulina Afriyie has been named to the 2020 BOXTOROW Division I Women's Basketball All-America Team on Monday.
Afriyie led the Eagles with averages 14.5 points and 9.6 rebounds per game in her final season.
The Bronx, New York, resident is the first NCCU women's basketball player to be named to the BOXTOROW All-America teams since the Eagles joined the DI ranks in 2011-12.
Afriyie had tremendous senior season in which she was among the league leaders in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in most statistical categories.
Per the final NCAA Statistics Report, Afriyie topped the MEAC with 14 double-doubles (26th nationally). She also ranked second in rebounds per game (9.6), third in the conference in field goal percentage (50.5%), fourth in points per game (14.5), seventh in blocks per game (1.13), eighth in free throw percentage (70.8%) and 15th in steals per game (1.5).
Afriyie earned All-MEAC honors for the second straight year. Afriyie, who earned Third Team All-MEAC accolades last year, was voted First Team All-MEAC in 2019-20.
The two-time NCCU team MVP garnered MEAC Player of the Week attention three times this season to go along with two MEAC Defensive Player of the Week awards. Her averages increased to 15.9 points, 10.6 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, 1.4 assists and 1.1 steals per game in 16 league contests.
Afriyie is a two-time MEAC Commissioner's All-Academic Team honoree and two-time NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month.
For her career, Afriyie's name will be found throughout NCCU women's basketball record book.
Afriyie scored 1,203 points for the maroon and gray, which ranks second in the DI era and ninth all-time at NCCU. She also became the DI era record holder with 955 career rebounds (third all-time at NCCU) and 129 career blocks. Other NCCU leaderboards Afriyie can be found ranked in include 126 career steals (5th DI era), 123 career assists (tied for 9th DI era), 8.0 career rebounding per game average (3rd DI era), 10.1 career scoring per game average (6th DI era), 289 total rebounds in 2019-20 (1st DI era single-season record; 6th all-time) and 9.6 rebounds per game average in 2019-20 (1st DI era single-season average record).
