DOVER, Del. – North Carolina Central University got hampered with foul trouble in the second half, and that allowed Delaware State to mount a comeback to defeat the Eagles at the buzzer, 68-66 inside Memorial Hall on Saturday, Jan. 11.
DSU (2-14, 1-1 MEAC) hopped out to a 6-0 run over NCCU (5-11, 1-1 MEAC) to start the game, but the Eagles were eventually able to wrest control of the contest after a 20-6 run eventually let the Eagles pull ahead by as many as 16.
Jibri Blount (Pittsburgh, Pa.) set the tone for the maroon and gray in the first half as he had 15 points and shot 6-for-7 from the floor. The Eagles as a team shot a scorching-hot 62.5% on 15-for-24 shooting, and went 12-for-15 from the charity stripe.
The second half proved to be a different story as the Hornets went to the free throw line 18 times to the Eagles' eight, as NCCU was called for 17 personal fouls, compared to DSU's seven. DSU was able to overcome a 16-point deficit as John Crosby (Baltimore, Md.) made a field goal as time expired to give the home team a 68-66 win.
Blount finished with a game-high 26 points and 13 rebounds for a second consecutive double-double, and a third consecutive game over 20 points.
Ty Graves (Greensboro, N.C.) followed with 12 points. Of note, four Eagles were disqualified from the game with five personal fouls.
DSU had four players reach double-figures, led by Crosby with 18 points. John Stansbury (New Castle, Del.) put in 15 points, followed by Ameer Bennett (Richmond, Va.) with 11 points and six rebounds. Ronald Lucas (Baltimore, Md.) finished with 10 points for the Hornets.
The Eagles will next visit Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday, Jan. 13
