Terriers Take Three-Set Affair over the Lady Eagles


DURHAM, N.C. — Junior libero Yomaries Villegas made a team-high 10 digs for host North Carolina Central University in a 3-0 non-conference volleyball loss to Wofford College Saturday afternoon in McDougald-McLendon Arena.
 
The Terriers (1-6) picked up their first win of the season with the 25-16, 25-18, 25-22 victory.
 
NCCU (0-6) will next play at Elon University on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
 
NCCU HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
 
Villegas has reached double-digit digs in five of six matches this season after coming up with 10 digs against the Terriers.
 
Sophomore Arlanda Faulkner paced NCCU with 10 points, including nine kills and two block assists. A quartet of Lady Eagles added five kills apiece, including junior Christine Alcox, junior McKayla Young, sophomore Ammaarah Williams and sophomore Jasmine Sanders.
 
Freshman Alyssa Pieh topped NCCU with four aces. Young tallied five block assists.
 
WOFFORD HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
 
Senior setter Lorissa King produced 41 assists as Wofford hit .337 for the match. Classmate Catie Cronister completed a double-double with match-high totals of 17 kills and 14 digs.
 
SET-BY-SET:
 
1ST: Sophomore Meghan Yaffa logged half of her 10 kills in the first set to lead the Terriers to their most lopsided win of the match of nine points.
 
2ND: A kill by Sanders gave NCCU a 13-10 lead at the midway point of the middle set, but Wofford went on a decisive 9-1 run to take control of the game.
 
3RD: The third set was the closest of the match, featuring 12 ties and six lead changes. A kill by Young had the maroon and gray up 15-13 before the Terriers barked back with another crucial run. Wofford won six of the next serves to slingshot in front, 19-16. NCCU kept the score close and Faulkner's fifth kill of the set inched the Lady Eagles within two on match point, 24-22, but Cronister's 17th kill ended the contest.
