2019 Elon Fall Invitational Results

ELON, N.C. — The senior doubles team of Emily Pena and Sofia Miller advanced to the championship match of the Powell Flight and sophomore Ivana Dragovic tallied a singles win to highlight play for the North Carolina Central University women's tennis team at the Elon University Fall Invitational that was contested from Friday to Sunday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
 
After a first-round bye, Pena and Miller picked up their win in the semifinals over Gardner-Webb University senior Milica Panic and sophomore Mayumi Saguchi. Pena and Miller won that contest 6-1 before losing in the Powell Doubles championship match by the same score to the Phoenix team of senior Sofia Edo and sophomore Olivia Archer.
 
Dragovic tallied her triumph in consolation play of the Phoenix Singles flight. Dragovic downed UNCG junior Tayah Cross by matching 6-3 set scores.
 
A pair of Lady Eagles won their first sets of the season, but both of their opponents rallied for three-set wins.
 
Junior Maru Berghaus took an early lead in her Gold Singles flight battle, but Mercer University freshman Mary Courville fought back for the 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win.
 
In her NCCU competitive debut, senior Jurasia Horvat grabbed the initial lead in her Oak Singles flight opener. However, USC Upstate junior Laura Illanes battled back for the 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 conquest.
 
The Lady Eagles had all eight of their players see action in the first fall event of the 2019-20 season, including competition by junior Frida Cnossen, junior Polina Sakharovia and sophomore Hannah Gaines.
 
NC Central will next host the fifth annual NCCU Invitational on Thursday-Friday, Oct. 24-25.
