Pirates Stay Hot with Road Win at NCCU


NORFOLK, Va. — The East Carolina University women's tennis team won its 19th straight match with a 7-0 non-conference dual victory over host North Carolina Central University on Wednesday.
 
The Pirates improved to 19-2 and the Lady Eagles dropped to 7-11.
 
ECU won all six singles matches in straight sets.
 
Senor No. 2 Celia Ruiz, who is a three-time All-American Athletic Conference honoree, topped NCCU sophomore Maru Berghaus 6-1, 6-2 to start the singles run in favor of the visitors. Ruiz is 15-1 in dual matches this season.
 
Junior No. 1 Lisa Hofbauer followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over redshirt sophomore Frida Cnossen. Freshman No. 4 Minette Van Vreden knocked off junior Sofia Miller by a 6-3, 6-2 margin to clinch the match.
 
In the tightest set of the day, freshman No. 3 Martina Paladini-Jennings rallied to win her opening set in a tiebreaker before outlasting NCCU rookie Hannah Gaines by a margin of 7-6, 6-1. Paladini-Jennings won the first-set tiebreaker 7-3.
 
Junior No. 6 Nastja Rettich (6-0, 6-2) and sophomore No. 5 Hsia Ho Chiao (6-3, 6-1) completed the sweep for the Pirates with wins over freshman Ivana Dragovic and sophomore Polina Sakharova, respectively.
 
ECU started the contest with wins on courts one and two in doubles to take the initial point.
 
NC Central will next visit Radford University on Saturday, April 13 at 1:30 p.m.
