DURHAM, N.C. — Sophomore
Frida Cnossen secured the lone point for the North Carolina Central University women's tennis team in a 6-1 non-conference home loss to Appalachian State University Friday.
Cnossen, the reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week, won two close sets over freshman Kate Earnhardt for her top-flight singles win. Cnossen leveled her record to 4-4 with the 7-6 (3), 7-5 triumph over Earnhardt.
The Mountaineers coasted in doubles play with the tightest match being a 6-3 win for Earnhardt and senior Jeannez Daniel over NCCU junior tandem of
Emily Pena and
Sofia Miller. The second straight win by Daniel/Earnhardt (2-1) kept Pena/Miller (3-4) from winning for a third straight contest.
App State sealed its victory with straight-set triumphs by sophomore No. 2 Maria Jose Zacarias (6-3, 6-2), No. 3 Daniel (6-2, 6-3) and senior No. 4 Rebecca Morse (6-1, 6-1).
Cnossen ended the Mountaineers shutout bid on the first court after surviving the 7-3 tiebreaker in the first set and rallying in the second set.
ASU (6-3) concluded play with wins by senior No. 5 Heidi Swope (6-3, 6-2) and sophomore No. 6 Sandra Anglesjo (6-1, 6-1).
NC Central (2-7) will next begin Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division play with a showdown at archrival North Carolina A&T State University on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
