Cnossen Wins in NCCU’s Dual Loss to the Seahawks

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Redshirt sophomore Frida Cnossen won a three-set affair to pick up the lone point for visiting North Carolina Central University in a 6-1 non-conference women's tennis loss at UNCW Thursday afternoon.

Cnossen (2-3) secured her second straight win playing atop NCCU's lineup. The Laren, Netherlands, product knocked off sophomore Rishika Ravindran in three close sets. The final score of the seesaw battle was 7-6 (6), 4-6, 10-6 in favor of Cnossen.

Sophomore Polina Sakharova also went three sets in her match on court No. 5, but junior Celeste Matute was able to rally to knock her off 4-6, 6-0, 10-3.

The Seahawks won the other four singles matches in straight sets.

UNCW leveled its record at 2-2.

A couple quick wins in doubles provided the Seahawks with the initial point of the day. The First Team All-CAA (Colonial Athletic Association) doubles tandem of senior Sabrina Barisano and sophomore Maddy Muller-Hughes sealed that team point with a 6-1 win over Cnossen and freshman Hannah Gaines.

In the tightest doubles bout, NCCU sophomore Maru Berghaus and freshman Ivan Dragovic were in a 3-3 deadlock with Matute and freshman Annie Gupta when play was stopped.

NC Central (1-4) next hosts Campbell University on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
