WBK GAME NOTES NO. 25: NC Central at Norfolk State

DURHAM, N.C. — The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team will try and move over .500 in the month of February when the Eagles visit Norfolk State University for a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) road game on Saturday at 4 p.m.

An audio broadcast of the league tilt will be broadcast for free on the NCCU Sports Network with Jonathan Duren providing the play-by-play. Live stats and video will also be provided by NSU. Fans can follow the NC Central athletics all season on NCCUEaglePride.com and on social media by searching NCCUAthletics (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram) or women's basketball at @NCCUWBB (Twitter) or @nccu_wbb (Instagram).

NCCU (7-17) committed a season-low 16 fouls in its last game to secure a narrow 65-64 home league win over Delaware State University. NCCU is ninth in the MEAC standings (just two games out of sixth place with five regular season games left). Senior guard Rodneysha Martin hit the go-ahead basket with one-minute left as the Eagles have won three of their last five games. Martin, an All-MEAC honoree last year, leads NCCU in scoring for a second straight season at 14.7 points per game. Junior Paulina Afriyie has been the top scorer for the Eagles in each of their last three games as she has increased her season average to 13.2 points per game. Afriyie ranks in the top-10 of the MEAC in scoring (10th), rebounding (9.1, 3rd), blocks (2.2, 2nd) and field-goal percentage (44.9%, 8th).

Norfolk State (12-11, 7-3) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 69-45 road win at Florida A&M University on Monday. The Spartans are fifth in the MEAC standings (top four teams get a first round bye). Junior La'Deja James and senior Raven Russell are NSU's two double-digit scorers as they average 13.5 and 11.2 points per game, respectively. Russell joins seniors Alexys Long (9.8 ppg) and Khadedra Croker (6.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 2.1 bpg) as preseason All-MEAC selections. Junior Kendrea Dawkins (9.7 ppg) is a fifth viable scoring option for a Spartan squad that leads the league in field-goal percentage (39.5%) by distributing the ball well with a league-best 14.3 assists per game.

NSU knocked off NCCU, 75-60, in the only meeting between the two teams last season. Croker had 13 points, seven rebounds and six blocks for the victors. The Spartans outrebounded the Eagles, 53-41, and held NCCU to just 27.9-percent shooting from the field.
