WBK GAME NOTES NO. 21: NC Central at Bethune-Cookman

DURHAM, N.C. — The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team will try and pick-up its second straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) road win when the Eagles travel to the Sunshine State to play at Bethune-Cookman University on Saturday.

An audio broadcast of the league tilt will be broadcast for free on the NCCU Sports Network with Jonathan Duren providing the play-by-play. Live stats and video will also be provided by BCU. Fans can follow the NC Central athletics all season on NCCUEaglePride.com and on social media by searching NCCUAthletics (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram) or women's basketball at @NCCUWBB (Twitter) or @nccu_wbb (Instagram).

NCCU (5-15, 2-5) picked up its first road win of the season with a 71-67 MEAC triumph at Savannah State University on Monday. Senior Rodneysha Martin scored 21 points in the victory and she leads the Eagles with 15.2 points per game. Junior Paulina Afriyie continues to rank amongst the league-leaders in numerous statistical categories, including points per game (12.5, 11th), rebounds per game (9.6, 3rd), blocks per game (1.3, 6th) and field-goal percentage (44.0%, 8th). Junior Shontai Totten and fellow sophomore guards Zaria Atkins and Kieche White all average around six points per game.

Bethune-Cookman (11-8, 4-3) has won its last two games, edging Morgan State University in overtime, 73-69, before topping Coppin State University, 71-65. The Wildcats has won or shared the regular season title in the MEAC in each of the last three seasons, but the Wildcats have yet to win the league's postseason tournament over that successful span. Senior guard Angel Golden is the reigning MEAC Player of the Year. She is second in the league in scoring at 18.3 points per game while also rankings second in the conference in made 3-pointers per game at 2.9. Senior forward Chasimmie Brown is averaging a double-double in MEAC play for the Wildcats with 14.0 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. BCU has suffered some injuries this season as senior All-MEAC honoree Ashanti Hunt has only played two games and freshman Kiana Williams, who is averaged double-digit scoring in non-conference play, got injured in the Wildcats' opener against NCCU and has not played since that outing.

BCU topped NCCU 67-50 in the first meeting in Durham on Jan. 5 after the Eagles only scored 13 points in the first half. Golden topped the victors with 21 points, including four made treys. Brown added 12 points and eight rebounds. Afriyie paced the Eagles with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds.
