WBK GAME NOTES NO. 19: N.C. A&T at NC Central


DURHAM, N.C. — The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team will host archrival North Carolina A&T State University in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) clash on Saturday at 2 p.m.
 
A video and audio broadcast of the league tilt will be broadcast for free on the NCCU Sports Network with Jonathan Duren providing the play-by-play. Live stats will also be available. NCCU (4-14, 1-4) will be finishing off a three-game home stand. The Eagles split their first two games at home last week, defeating Coppin State University (62-57) and losing to Morgan State University (65-62). All four of NCCU's wins have been at home. Senior guard Rodneysha Martin has been NCCU's leading scorer in eight of her first 11 games back from injury and is averaging a team-best 15.7 points per game. The Preseason All-MEAC honoree is shooting 40-percent from the field and also chipping in 3.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 steals per game. Junior forward Paulina Afriyie has posted two consecutive double-doubles and has seven on the season, earning her second MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors this season on Tuesday. Afriyie is in the top-10 of the MEAC in points per game (13.0, 10th), rebounds per game (9.6, 3rd), field-goal percentage (45.8%, 8th) and blocks per game (1.4, 6th). Sophomore Kieche White returned to NCCU's lineup at the beginning of league play and is averaging 7.2 points through five MEAC tilts. Junior Shontai Totten (6.0 ppg, 2.3 apg, .867 FT%) and sophomore Zaria Atkins (5.5 ppg, 2.1 apg, .909 FT%) are NCCU's next two top scorers and they lead the squad in assists and free-throw percentage.
 
NCAT (8-10, 5-0) is one of the two remaining undefeated teams in MEAC play and is coming off a pair of blowout home wins over MSU (62-29) and CSU (66-42). The defending MEAC champions are the preseason favorites in the conference. Junior guard C'Coriea Foy leads the Aggies with 12.4 points and 1.8 steals per game. Foy was a Second Team All-MEAC selection in her first season at N.C. A&T after transferring in from University of Alabama and she is also chipping in 2.7 assists per game. Junior guard Cinia McCray is NCAT's other double-digit scorer, averaging, 11.9 points per game, but she has missed three of their first five league games. Junior center Alexus Lessears is a two-time All-MEAC postseason honoree and is tallying 8.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Junior guard Shantell Bostick is the Aggies' top playmaker with 2.9 assists per game and senior forward Charnise Tyler is topping the team with 6.3 rebounds per game.
 
North Carolina A&T swept last both matchups last season, knocking off the Eagles 67-54 in Greensboro and then hanging on for a 60-57 win in Durham. Lessears nearly averaged a double-double in the two wins for the Aggies with 9.5 points and 15.5 rebounds per game. Bostick added an average of 12 points per game and Foy averaged 9 points and 4.5 steals. For NCCU, White scored in double digits both times and averaged 16 points per game.
