Terriers Spoil Lady Eagles Home Opener

DURHAM, N.C. — Wofford College won all six singles matches in straight sets to complete a 7-0 non-conference women's tennis victory over host North Carolina Central University Friday afternoon.

The Terriers were playing their first match of the season.

Wofford won the first two doubles matches to start the day. Sophomore Kay Kluska and freshman Lilie Steryous posted a 6-1 conquest of sophomore Maru Berghaus and freshman Ivana Dragovic in the middle doubles match. Sophomore Jenna Vroman and senior Cassidy Hicks – an All-SoCon doubles team last season – sealed the first team point in the top draw by holding off redshirt sophomore Frida Cnossen and freshman Hannah Gaines by a 6-3 margin.

For the second straight dual match to the season, juniors Emily Pena and Sofia Miller were in a tight match at No. 3 for NCCU when their battle was once again stopped once the doubles team point was decided. They were trailing freshmen Lauren Joch and Liz Massie 3-2 at the stoppage point.

Vroman, who is the reigning SoCon Freshman of the Year, started her second season off with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Berghaus in the marquee singles draw. Hicks needed to win a tiebreaker in the second set to complete a 6-1, 7-6 (5) win over Cnossen in the second flight. Joch downed Dragovic (6-0, 6-1) just moments before Kluska topped Gaines (6-2, 6-1) to seal the team victory. Steryous needed more work to finally prevail over Miller (6-4, 6-4) in the third slot in the lineup. Freshman Alexandra Hildell completed the Terriers sweep with her 7-6 (7), 6-2 defeat of sophomore Polina Sakharovia.

NC Central (0-2) next hosts Presbyterian College on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 2:30 p.m.
