Cnossen and Gaines Win Doubles Match in NCCU’s Loss to PC

DURHAM, N.C. — Redshirt sophomore Frida Cnossen and freshman Hannah Gaines tallied a 6-4 doubles win for host North Carolina Central University in a 7-0 non-conference women's tennis loss to visiting Presbyterian College Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Eagles nearly won doubles, but sophomore Polina Sakharova and freshman Ivana Dragovic lost their No. 3 tilt in a tiebreaker. The freshmen Shelly Ray and Beth Lacey squeaked out the clinching 7-6 win by rolling in the tiebreaker by a score of 7-1 after PC's middle doubles tandem won 6-1.

The Blue Hose went on to win all six singles matches in straight sets to complete their second shutout win of the day. Presbyterian (3-1 Overall) defeated North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro by a 7-0 score in the morning.

Cnossen and Gaines tallied their first win together from the top position in NCCU's doubles lineup. They topped senior Sydney Patton and freshman Jessica Leeman by a 6-4 margin.

Dragovic and junior Emily Pena had the closest singles matches for the Lady Eagles from the fourth and positions in the lineup, respectively. They both lost by matching scores of 6-4, 6-3.

Sophomore Maru Berghaus, who played at No. 1 singles in NCCU's first two matches, did not play due to illness moving the six active Lady Eagles up a position in the lineup Saturday.

NC Central (0-3) next hosts Johnson C. Smith University on Saturday at 11 a.m.
