Phoenix Sweep NCCU Women’s Tennis Opener

ELON, N.C. — North Carolina Central University redshirt sophomore Frida Cnossen forced a super tiebreaker in her return to the Eagles lineup after sitting out last season due to injury, but host Elon University survived that match to secure a 7-0 non-conference dual match victory Wednesday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Cnossen was up 4-1 in the race to 10 points in the tiebreaker, but senior Montana Moore won the next seven points to start a closing 9-2 run to escape with the No. 2 singles victory and finish off the sweep for the Phoenix.

Elon (2-1) moved over .500 after winning its second match of the day. The Phoenix also swept North Carolina A&T State University earlier in the day.

A pair of 6-1 wins in the top two doubles matches provided the first point of the day to Elon. Senior Maria Paraja and junior Koniaev are reigning all-conference doubles players from the Colonial Athletic Conference and they each won partnered with a rookie teammate. At No. 3 doubles, NCCU juniors Sofia Miller and Emily Pena were trailing 4-3 in a tight battle when play was stopped after the Phoenix secured the team point.

Elon won five singles matches in straight sets, including No. 1 senior Suzanne Zenoni over sophomore Maru Berghaus (6-2, 6-1), No. 3 Paraja over Miller (6-1, 6-2), No. 4 freshman Nicole Shiau over freshman Hannah Gaines (6-1, 6-4), No. 5 freshman Olivia Archer over freshman Ivana Dragovic (6-0, 6-0) and No. 6 junior Sofia Edo over sophomore Polina Sakharova (6-2, 6-0).

NC Central (0-1) will next make its home debut against Wofford College on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
