Raasean Davis and softball senior
Courtney Mirabella were honored as the North Carolina Central University Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year during the annual NCCU Athletics awards ceremony, The Eddies, on Monday, April 30, at the Carolina Theatre in downtown Durham.
Davis, who hails from Chicago, Illinois, was named All-MEAC Second Team, MEAC All-Tournament Team, All-State Second Team, NABC All-District and BOXTOROW All-American. He started all 35 games of the 2017-18 campaign and led the team with 15.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per contest. His 282 rebounds are the most by an Eagle since the 1983-84 season. Davis led the MEAC and finished third in the NCAA in field-goal percentage with a mark of 67.1 percent of made attempts. Davis averaged 12.5 points and 12.3 rebounds per game during the MEAC championship run on his way to being named to the All-Tournament team.
Mirabella, a native of Bradenton, Florida, shattered NCCU single-season record for strikeouts, as she currently has 274 strikeouts, which leads the MEAC and ranks fourth in NCAA Division I. She also tops the conference with a 1.76 ERA with 24 complete games, eight shutouts (including a no-hitter) and an opponent batting average of .195. Mirabella has recorded 15 victories, which is the most by an NCCU pitcher in the Division I era.
The Chancellor's Award, presented to the student-athlete with the highest overall grade point average, was earned by men's tennis senior
