BUIES CREEK, N.C. — Freshman
Maru Berghaus competed in the two closest matches for the North Carolina Central University women's tennis team in a 7-0 non-conference road loss at Campbell University Tuesday afternoon.
The Camels won their second straight match to move to 10-7 overall. The Lady Eagles slipped to 0-15.
Berghaus was in a tight first set before falling to sophomore Alexandra Nicoara in the second-seeded singles match by a final score of 6-4, 6-1. The native of Cologne, Germany, had five of NCCU's 13 total game wins.
Sophomore No. 1 Lou Regan (6-0, 6-1), junior No. 3 Isabel Boada (6-2, 6-0), junior No. 4 Pauline Roustan (6-1, 6-1), sophomore Lea Cutura (6-0, 6-0) and sophomore Huda McGraw (6-1, 6-2) had the other wins for the Camels.
The Lady Eagles lost a pair of 6-2 doubles matches by the teams of Berghaus and sophomore
Sofia Miller along with senior
Jamie Rogers and freshman
Polina Sakharova.
The triumphant pairing for Campbell were junior Alexandra Andrivot/Boada, freshman Ana Castillo/senior Georgina Segarra and Regen/Cutura.
NCCU next hosts Hampton University on Saturday at 10 a.m.
