Savannah State Secures Road Win at NCCU


DURHAM, N.C. — Senior Jamie Rogers and freshman Maru Berghaus secured singles wins for host North Carolina Central University in a 5-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division women's tennis loss to Savannah State University Monday afternoon.
 
A pair of 6-2 wins by Savannah State's second and third doubles teams secured the first team point for the visitors. The triumphant Lady Tiger tandems were senior Rachida El Kateb partnering with freshman Sofia Shut'ko and the freshmen duo of Ekaterina Vorobeva and Shakendra Alston.
 
Rogers and freshman Polina Sakharova prevailed 6-2 for NCCU to prevent the doubles sweep. Rogers and Sakharova improved to 5-6 as partners after knocking of the Ranjan sisters.
 
However, it was freshman Muskaan Ranjan and junior Sansrita Ranjan that extended the Lady Tigers' advantage to 3-0 with straight-set singles wins on courts three and four, respectively.
 
The Lady Eagles climb to within one at 3-2 with the victories by Rogers and Berghaus.
 
Rogers topped Vorobeva 6-0, 7-5 for her team his fourth win while Berghaus desposed of Shut'ko by matching 6-4 set scores for her third win. Rogers and Berghaus were playing atop the maroon and gray lineup.
 
A perfect 6-0, 6-0 score by El Kateb sealed the team victory for the Lady Tigers from the sixth position in the lineup. Alston concluded action with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5.
 
Savannah State improved to 3-13 on the season and 1-3 in the league's Southern Division.
 
NCCU (0-16, 0-4) next hosts Meredith College on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. The Lady Eagles were eliminated from MEAC postseason consideration with Monday's loss.
