DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – There was plenty of rain in the contest between North Carolina Central University and Bethune-Cookman, but all the lightning was in the bats of the two clubs as the Wildcats took a high-scoring 9-7 decision on Sunday, April 22 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
There were a total of 16 runs and 20 hits between the two sides.
The game was filled with plenty of action in the first three innings, as 12 total runs were put on the board with the game level at 6-6 after the first third of the contest.
BCU (17-24, 11-7 MEAC) batted around in the bottom of the first inning and scored four, but NCCU (22-21, 7-11 MEAC) fired right back with four runs in the top of the second to knot the game at 4-4.
Zach Michalski (Belews Creek, N.C.) started the second by demolishing the first pitch down the left field line for his league-leading eighth home run of the year to put the Eagles on the board.
NCCU found three more runs in the frame on RBI singles from
Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) and
Andrew Valichka (Pedricktown, N.J.) and an error to tie the game. BCU pulled ahead once again in the bottom of the second on a home run to left-center from Danny Rodriguez (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) to move the Wildcats in front 6-4, but once again the Eagles immediately leveled the game.
Jordan Varela-Payne (Rolesville, N.C.) delivered a two-out bases-loaded RBI single to right field that scored two, with help from an error from the right fielder to knot the game at 6-6 after the top of the third. Through the first three frames, both teams had an identical linescore of six runs on six hits, and two errors.
The game stalled in the bottom of the fourth inning with a rain delay of 1:37.
Pitching dominated the middle inning of the contest until BCU finally found a way to unravel the knot and take a 9-6 lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Nate Sterijevski (Chiefland, Fla.) picked up the eventual game-winning hit on an RBI single to right field.
Valichka launched a solo homer down the left-field line to spark a comeback bid, but the Eagles were held off for the final three outs.
NCCU is next on the road at UNC Asheville on Wednesday, April 25.
