NCCU Eagles Felled in Tightly-Contested Doubleheader with Aggies

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University brought the tying run into the mix in both games of the doubleheader, but North Carolina A&T was able to weather the surge for 7-5 and 4-3 wins on Saturday, April 14 at the Durham Athletic Park.

GAME ONE: NCAT (19-15, 9-4 MEAC) jumped ahead early with a pair of runs in the first inning, and AJ Hunt (Chesapeake, Va.) started the scoring with a solo home run out to left that was carried by the strong winds that blew all afternoon.

NCCU (20-18, 6-8 MEAC) tied the game in the bottom of the second on back-to-back hits from Evan Holland (Erial, N.J.) and Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.), and then took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly from Zach Michalski (Belews Creek, N.C.).  The Eagles expanded the lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Jordan Varela-Payne (Rolesville, N.C.) to get a 4-2 advantage over the Aggies.

NCAT steadily worked its way back into the game with runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the game at 4-4 before breaking through with three runs in the top of the ninth, capped by a two-run single from Milton Rivera (Humacao, Puerto Rico).

The Eagles mounted a charge in the bottom of the frame after Williams lifted one to the roof of the warehouse in right field on a leadoff home run to trim the lead to 7-5.  Varela-Payne then walked and advanced to second after a single, allowing the tying run to come to the plate, but Josh Stikeleather (Kenly, N.C.) didn't allow another run to pick up the save.

Devin Sweet (Greensboro, N.C.) got the start for the Eagles in game one, and tossed 8.1 innings with seven strikeouts.

GAME TWO: NCAT pulled ahead first in game to as well in the top of the second inning, but the Eagles responded immediately in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly from Holland.  The Aggies grabbed the lead for good in the top of the third on a two-RBI single from Hunt as he collected his fourth RBIs of the doubleheader.  Myles Sowell (Greensboro, N.C.) tacked on one more for the guests with a solo homer in the top of the fourth to give NCAT a 4-1 lead.

The Eagles took advantage of an error in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored a run on a sacrifice fly from Timmy Fischvogt (Kernersville, N.C.), and then sparked another late-inning rally in the seventh inning.  Williams and Varela-Payne hit back-to-back singles to start the seventh, putting the tying run on base without an out for the Eagles.  Corey Joyce (Lexington, N.C.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position, and Michalski brought home a run on a sacrifice fly to make the game 4-3 with the tying run still in scoring position with two outs.  However, Stikeleather once again was able to hold off the Eagles to pick up saves in both ends of the doubleheader.

Game three of the weekend series will be on Sunday, April 15 at 11:00 a.m. at the Durham Athletic Park.  Admission is free.
