TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – North Carolina Central University faced strong pitching from Florida A&M as the Rattlers' starters tossed two complete games to take both ends of the doubleheader and sweep the Eagles, 3-0 and 11-3 at Moore-Kittles Field on Saturday, March 31.
This is the first MEAC Southern Division series that NCCU (19-11, 6-6 MEAC) has dropped this season.
GAME ONE: FAMU (14-17, 7-2 MEAC) took an early lead as it loaded the bases and drove in two runs to take a 2-0 lead after the first frame. Those two runs were all that starter Thomas Nicoll (Tallahassee, Fla.) needed as he pitched a complete game shutout to give the Rattlers the series victory.
At one point, Nicoll set down 12 consecutive batters, and collected 11 strikeouts on the way to the victory. FAMU added one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a wild pitch. John Capra (Melbourne, Fla.) knocked a pair of hits for the Rattlers and notched one RBI.
NCCU picked up four hits in the game.
GAME TWO: FAMU again scored the first two runs of the game in the first inning, this time with help from a pair of errors. Dallas Oliver (Chipley, Fla.) faced the minimum through the first three innings, but NCCU worked its way onto the scoreboard in the top of the fourth by way of a sacrifice fly from
Zach Michalski (Belews Creek, N.C.).
FAMU responded immediately with another three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, as the Eagles were bitten by another error.
Jordan Varela-Payne (Rolesville, N.C.) pulled a run back on an RBI single in the top of the fifth, but again the Rattlers responded at the next opportunity with a two-RBI single.
The Rattlers again took advantage of an error in the bottom of the sixth and scored four runs to stretch the lead out to 11-2.
Caleb Coyle (Wake Forest, N.C.) hit his second double of the game to drive in a run in the top of the seventh, but that was the final run for the Eagles.
Devin Sweet (Greensboro, N.C.) picked up a strikeout in game two and tied Glenn Frye for the modern era career strikeout lead with his 214th over four years.
FAMU again had a pitcher go the distance, as Oliver pitched all seven innings for a complete game victory.
NCCU returns home to host Presbyterian on Tuesday, April 3 at the Durham Athletic Park at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free.
