Berghaus and Miller Win in Lady Eagles' Loss to the Bears

DURHAM, N.C. — The North Carolina Central University women's tennis team won a total of three matches on Friday in a 5-2 dual match loss to fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) member Morgan State University.

Freshman Maru Berghaus and sophomore Sofia Miller picked up the Lady Eagles' points while senior Jamie Rogers and freshman Polina Sakharova notched a doubles victory for NCCU.

MSU won its third straight match to improve to 4-9 on the season.

Senior No. 1 Danielle Thompson, sophomore No. 3 Peggy Rooke, freshman No. 5 Asmara Faluke and sophomore No. 6 Dana Santiago sealed the Bears victory with straight-set wins.

In the most dramatic match of the day, Miller outlasted junior Oriane Thompson on the fourth court. Miller, who lost the first set and trailed 5-2 in the third set, rallied to win the next four games and then needed to win an extended tiebreaker to squeak out the triumph. Miller's 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) victory was her first dual match win since transferring to NCCU this season.

Berghaus first put the Lady Eagles on the board by coasting to straight-set win from the second position in the maroon and gray lineup. Berghaus disposed of sophomore Alexus Gill by a score of 6-0, 6-3 for her second win.

Rogers and Sakharova tallied their second straight conquest as partners from atop NCCU's doubles lineup. They picked up a 6-2 win over Gill and Faluke.

However, Thompson/Rooke and Santiago/Yehouenou won the other doubles bouts to give the visitors the first team point.

NCCU (0-12) returns to MEAC Southern Division play when the Lady Eagles entertain rival North Carolina A&T State University on Wednesday at Noon.
