SAVANNAH, Ga. — Junior Sebastian Bromley and sophomore Theofanis Kontopoulos picked up a pair of wins for the North Carolina Central University men's tennis team in a 4-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division loss to Bethune-Cookman University on Sunday at the Bacon Park Tennis Club.

With the showdown level at 3-3, BCU sophomore Juan Diego Ruiz outlasted NCCU sophomore Maksym Konovalov in a three-set battle to clinch the team victor. Diego Ruiz edged Konovalov by a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

The Wildcats remained undefeated in the Southern Division at 2-0 while improving to 3-5 on the season.

NCCU swept doubles to take the early 1-nil advantage. The Eagles' top two doubles teams both won 6-3 to clinch the point with Kontopoulos partnering with Konovalov and Bromley teaming up with junior Gabriel Cucalon. Sophomores Brooks Campbell and Pablo Juez Torres survived for a 7-6 victory over senior David Ocampo and freshman Philip Lynch with a 7-4 tiebreaker win.

Kontopoulos and Konovalov moved over .500 as a tandem, improving to 3-2, while the duos of Cucalon/Bromley and Campbell/Juez Torres both notched their second wins together.

The Wildcats rushed ahead to start singles play with a pair of straight set wins in the fifth and sixth flights.

Junior No. 2 Jose Plazas then squeaked out a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 triumph over Cucalon in a clash of two All-MEAC performers to push the Bethune-Cookman lead to 3-1.

A pair of three-set wins by Kontopoulos and Bromley on courts one and three, respectively, leveled the match. Kontopoulos (4-5) rallied to top senior Victor Bravo 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 for his team-high fourth win. Bromley (2-7) did the same against Ocampo in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 comeback for his second straight win.

However, the Diego Ruiz survived the fourth consecutive match to finish in three sets to finish play in favor of the Wildcats.

NCCU (0-9 Overall, 0-3 MEAC) continues its spring break trip in Orlando, Florida, against Howard University on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m.
