SAVANNAH, Ga. — A win by junior
Sebastian Bromley pulled the North Carolina Central University men's tennis team to within one point of Florida A&M University, 3-2, before the Rattlers clinched a 5-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division victory on Saturday afternoon at Bacon Park Tennis Club with a pair of narrow three-set wins.
The 2017 MEAC tourney champions got clutch play late from their top two players in survive the close match.
Junior transfer Nourelidin Adam and classmate Federico Nani posted the seesaw wins for the Rattlers.
Adam edged NCCU sophomore
Theofanis Kontopoulos – 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3) – in a No. 1 battle that featured two tiebreakers.
Nani won a matchup of two All-MEAC honorees on the second court over junior
Gabriel Cucalon, squeaking out a 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3 affair.
NCCU got on the board first with a pair of doubles wins. The duo of Cucalon and Bromley and the tandem of sophomores
Brooks Campbell and
Pablo Juez Torres both picked up their first wins of the year as partners. Cucalon and Bromley rolled to a 6-1 conquest while Campbell and Juez Torres gutted out a 7-6 (4) decision.
A trio of straight-set wins in the bottom half of the singles lineup slithered the Rattlers ahead, 3-1.
Bromley responded for the Eagles with his 6-4, 6-3 victory over junior Samer Hema Hansona on the third court, but FAMU had the final answer.
NCCU (0-8 Overall, 0-2 MEAC) continues its spring break trip in Savannah, Georgia, against Bethune-Cookman University on Sunday at 10 a.m.
