BOX SCORE
DURHAM, N.C. — North Carolina Central University sophomore
Theofanis Kontopoulos won both his singles and doubles matches for host North Carolina Central University in a 5-2 home loss to Campbell University Tuesday afternoon.
The Camels edged the Eagles in doubles and then won a trio of singles matches in straight sets to capture the victory. Campbell (5-4) moved over .500 with the win.
Kontopoulos, who is the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, picked up a doubles win with fellow sophomore
Maksym Konovalov in the middle draw. The duo's first win together was by a 6-4 margin.
However, Campbell won the first and third doubles bouts, 6-4 and 6-1, respectively to get on the team board first. The Camels added straight-set singles wins by junior No. 3 Dustin Werner, junior No. 4 Gerard Sola and senior No. 6 Lorenz Schwab finished off the team victory.
Freshman Ted Williams rallied past Konovalov from the fifth position in the lineup to give the visitors their final point.
With only four courts at NCCU, the Eagles made things interesting heading into the late fifth and sixth seeded matches as dramatic three-set victories by Kontopoulos and Cucalon pulled the team score to 3-2.
Kontopoulos (2-4) knocked a familiar player in Ondrej Labik in the marquee match. Kontopoulos eventually won by a 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 margin over the former All-MEAC honoree from Morgan State University.
Cucalon (2-4) netted his second straight win, a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 conquest, in a showdown against senior Lorenz Schwab on the second court.
Cucalon and junior
Sebastian Bromley barely lost in the top doubles match, 6-4, to a Campbell duo in Schwab and Werner that earned Big South First Team acclaim together last season.
NCCU next begins MEAC Southern Division play at South Carolina State University on Saturday, March 3 at 1 p.m.
