WBK GAME NOTES NO. 9: Wofford at NC Central


DURHAM, N.C. — The North Carolina Central University women's basketball will try and build on its first win of the season as the Eagles conclude a five-game homestand against Wofford College on Saturday with an early tipoff inside McDougald-McLendon Arena at 10 a.m.

NCCU (1-7) picked up its first win of the season and first program win over UNCG on Wednesday by a final score of 66-57. Senior All-MEAC honoree Rodneysha Martin returned to the lineup against the Spartans after missing the first seven games due to injury. Martin, who led NCCU in scoring last season at 12.8 points per game, immediately made an impact with a career-high 27 points. Martin – the top free throw shooter in the MEAC last season, made 8 of 10 free throws in her season debut. Junior forward Paulina Afriyie is coming off her second double-double of the season (10th of her career) with 17 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. Afriyie, who is averaging 13.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, also contributed a career-high five blocks against UNCG. The Eagles next three guards have all had big games as junior Shontai Totten is averaging 7.7 points per game and team-best 3.4 assists per game; freshman Dasmine Kasey is shooting 44-percent from behind the arc on the way to 6.8 points per game; and freshman Jasmine Pollock leads the Eagles in made 3-pointers and is contributing 5.5 points per game.
 
Wofford (6-4) has won three straight games and is coming off a 101-72 blowout win at Longwood University last Saturday. The Terriers have scored 100-plus points in two consecutive games (first time in program history). Junior guard Chloe Wanink is a previous All-SoCon honoree who led Wofford in scoring two seasons ago and has bounced back from injury last season to lead the Terriers with 18.8 points per game. Wanink is a sharpshooter, firing at 45-percent from the field (including nearly 44-percent from 3-point distance) and 83-percent from the free-throw line. Freshman Jackie Carman follows with 14.8 points per game. Wanink and Carman are combining to average over five made 3-pointers per game. Sophomore forward Jamari McDavid is a third Terrier averaging double-digit scoring at 10.1 points per game and she paces Wofford on the backboards with 6.2 rebounds per game.
 
Wanink scored 31 points to lead Wofford to a 77-56 home victory over NCCU early last season. It was a close game that the Terriers pulled away late, outscoring the Eagles 24-11 in the fourth quarter. Wofford also took advantage of 27 fouls by the visitors by making 28 of 37 free throws. Martin was NCCU's lone double-digit scorer in that contest with 11 points. Martin also had a team-high six rebounds.
