NCCU (0-6) had a close game at halftime slip away in the second half, dropping an 82-63 decision to USC Upstate in their last game Saturday. The Eagles will need to try and slow down the scoring of their opponents as they have allowed 80-plus points in five of their first six games and are allowing their foes to make half of their shot attempts. Junior forward
Paulina Afriyie, who scored a season-best 21 points against the Spartans, leads NCCU with 11.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. Junior transfers
Lanay Rodney and
Shontai Totten follow in the scoring column, both bucketing nearly eight points per contest. The next six Eagles all average between 4-6 points per game. Senior All-MEAC honoree
Rodneysha Martin and sophomore MEAC All-Rookie selection
Kieche White has yet to play this season due to injury.
Coastal Carolina (4-1) won both of its games in its Thanksgiving Classic last week, squeaking past Bowling Green University, 81-80, and rolling past University of Memphis, 90-71. Junior guard DJ Williams, who missed the first two games of the season, has jumped back into the lineup as a reigning All-Sun Belt performer and is providing 21.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Junior transfer Caitlin Roche is bucketing connecting on nearly four made 3-pointers per game as the Chanticleers other double-digit scorer with 14.6 points per game. Junior center Naheria Hamilton is a preseason All-Sun Belt honoree and is tallying 7.4 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game.
The Chants shot 56-percent from the field in slipping past NCCU, 68-65, last season in Conway, South Carolina. Williams paced the victors with 21 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals. Hamilton added 17 points. Martin was the top scorer for the Eagles with 20 points. Senior
