Four Eagles Compete in ITA Carolina Regional

2018 ITA Carolina Regional Final Results

CARY, N.C. — Senior Gabriel Cucalon and freshman Amit Baran picked up the lone win for the North Carolina Central University men's tennis team in a consolation doubles match at the 2018 ITA Carolina Regional hosted by Duke University at the Cary Tennis Park Friday-Tuesday.

Cucalon and Baran were leading the Elon University team of seniors Mario Paccini and Felipe Sarrasague 4-1 when the Phoenix team retired to give the NCCU duo the victory. They also went the distance in their opening match in the main draw, but were eventually eliminated 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (5) by the Wake Forest University freshmen squad of Ryan Mueller and Patrick Hannity.

Cucalon and Baran won at least one doubles match in each of NCCU's first three fall tournaments.

Cucalon had advanced to the third round of singles the ITA Carolina Regional in 2016 and 2017, but was unable to advance this year after drawing Paccini. The three-time all-conference honoree in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) knocked off Cucalon 6-3, 6-1.

NCCU's other three competitors were also defeated in straight sets in the opening round of the 128-player event.

Baran was knocked off by Presbyterian College freshman Max Benson by matching 6-3 set scores. Freshman Christos Dagklis suffered a 6-1, 6-3 setback to Appalachian State University junior Milo Bargeron. Fellow classmate Thanos Spyropoulos was eliminated 6-1, 6-1 by University of South Carolina freshman Patrick Cacciatore.

All four Eagles lost their consolation matches.

Baran and Dagklis found themselves in the closest exhibition bouts. Baran was edged in a three-set affair to Clemson University freshman Mike Agee. Baron won the second set in a tiebreaker, but Agee was able to nip Baran by a final score of 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3. Dagklis won his first set, but Coastal Carolina University sophomore Daiki Tanabe rallied for the 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 triumph.

Dagklis and Spyropoulos also competed in doubles and that tandem lost both of their trips to the court in straight sets by teams from Charlotte and UNCG.

NCCU concluded its fall season and will begin dual-match play in January. The full schedule will be published on NCCUEaglePride.com soon.
