2017 Elon Fall Invitational Men's Results
ELON, N.C. – The doubles team of sophomores
Theofanis Kontopoulos and
Pablo Juez Torres went undefeated and all five North Carolina Central University men's tennis competitors picked up at least one singles victory apiece in the Elon University Fall Invitational at the Jimmy Powell Center over the weekend of Sept. 22-24.
Kontopoulos picked up a pair of singles wins while Juez Torres, sophomore
Brooks Campbell, sophomore
Maksym Konovalov and junior
Gabriel Cucalon all got into the win column once.
The Eagles duo of Kontopoulos and Juez Torres had the most success in the White Doubles bracket. They started off with an 8-4 triumph over rivals Brett Caban and Jordan Lawrence of North Carolina A&T State University. Kontopoulos and Juez Torres added an 8-5 victory over a duo form UNCG to complete their flawless play together.
Kontopoulos, who is from Corinthos, Greece, finished 2-1 in the Gold Singles bracket. He garnered straight-set wins against USC Upstate and Elon.
Konovalov netted a first-round win in the Powell Singles bracket over a host Phoenix player. Campbell and Juez Torres were also successful in their first matches of the event as they competed in the White Singles bracket. Campbell posted a flawless 6-0, 6-0 conquest over the Aggies' Lawrence. Juez Torres needed three sets to claim in success over a UNC Asheville foe.
Cucalon battled in the Maroon Singles bracket and he notched his straight-set victory over a College of Charleston competitor in consolation play.
NCCU will conclude play for the fall portion of its schedule at the ITA Carolina Regional Championship hosted by Duke University at the Cary Tennis Park on Oct. 13-17.
