Host Camels Claim Straight-Set Victory over NCCU


BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Junior libero Bree Simmons picked up a match-high 20 digs for visiting North Carolina Central University in a 3-0 loss to host Campbell University in its final match of the Hampton Inn Holly Springs Invitational Saturday.
 
The Camels scored over half of their points with 43 kills to complete the 25-10, 25-19, 25-20 conquest. Campbell remained undefeated at 2-0 while the Lady Eagles slipped to 0-3.
                                                            
NCCU HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
Simmons posted double-digit digs in all three matches during the event and her 20 digs against the Camels is her second 20-dig performance.
 
Freshman Da'Nesha Miller had a team-high six kills, marking the second time in three matches she has led the maroon and gray attack. Juniors Whitney White and Kierra Shipman chipped in four kills and freshman McKayla Young spiked three.
 
Senior setter Paige Phillips recorded an assist on 19 of NCCU's 20 kills. Phillips added three block assists.
 
Freshman Natasha Berrios Laguerre served up two of the Lady Eagles' four aces.
 
CAMPBELL HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
Sophomore Allena Heath paced the Camels with a double-double of 16 kills and 11 digs. Junior Jessica Stocking added 11 kills. Senior setter Summer Schuitema notched 25 assists.
 
Campbell totaled 11 blocks with freshman Alysha Mitchell pacing the front-row defense with three solo blocks and three block assists.
 
SET-BY-SET:
1ST:  The Camels hit a match-high .364 in the opener to coast to a 15-point win.
 
2ND: Heath and Stocking had their best set of the match in the middle with six and four kills, respectively, in leading Campbell to a six-point victory.
 
3RD: The Lady Eagles kept things interesting in the final frame as the period featured nine ties and four lead changes. An ace by Berrios Laguerre had NCCU up 9-6 early. The Camels fought back and led 16-13 before a 6-2 rally put the visitors ahead on last time at 19-18. However, Campbell won seven of the next eight serves to close out the match.

NCCU will play three matches in the AmericInn Runnin' Bulldog Invitational hosted by Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 1-2.
